Summer Time!
I'm so happy to be arriving at June with my sanity intact. The last month has been challenging on several different fronts, and my biggest enemy has been worry. I've found myself worrying about everything, but I think I'm finally beginning to get a grip and relax a little bit. I've been worrying about running a business in a tight economy, and about launching my newly graduated son into the world of college and a more adult way of life. I've even been fretting about my husband's business which is silly, since I have nothing to do with it, and he's a big boy who knows what he's doing. I've been anxious over how my youngest son is going to adjust when his big brother, and best friend leaves for college in the fall.

I hope you don't mind that I'm sharing my worry with you, but if truth be told, I highly suspect that most of you can relate to my worry. I think it's a chronic condition called life, and we're all in this together. So, in an attempt to regain a mental grip I've resolved to tackle the following: Recommit to better exercise and eating habits - I've gotten sloppy with both. Improve my time management - I need to learn to say no to some things. Find some healthy ways to release anger - Yes, I have a bit of a temper, and I can't believe I just publicly admitted to it. And lastly, adopt a more positive attitude - I will wake up in the morning and tell myself that my glass is half full. Summer and warm weather are finally here, and kids are out of school. It's time for some fun with family and friends. I'm looking forward to cookouts, evenings on my front porch watching fireflies, and mad dashes for the ice cream truck.

On this note, and after much discussion with my employees, we've decided The Original Soap Dish is going to try something new this summer. We're adopting new summer hours. Beginning this week we will be closed on Wednesdays, and will close at 3 PM on Friday afternoons. We will resume normal operating hours after August 30th. When planning your summer orders, be sure to take the new hours into consideration since we won't be shipping on Wednesdays.

I spend a certain amount of time every day reading industry related articles, and following up on interesting links on the web. Here's a small selection of kid friendly recipes and eco-craft projects I've run across. If you're anything like me, you can always use some inspiration in the cooking department. A few of the projects might come in handy this summer when the kids start whining about boredom.

National Watermelon Promotion Board - Some really cute ideas for watermelon.
Family Fun Website - Large collection of information and recipes devoted to cooking with kids. The Month of Meals section is worth it's weight in gold if you have cooking fatigue.
Home & Family Network Website - Cooking with kids. I really like the kid friendly veggie section. I'm using it to help me with my 45 year old veggie problem (husband).
Crafting a Green World Website - Craft idea for those pesky #5 plastic yogurt cups that so many city recycling centers won't accept.
How Can I Recycle This Website - Every off the wall idea for recycling that you could possible ever think of. Fun site!
The NewNew Blog - Recycle Junk Mail into Paper Beads
Urban Guide to the Green Life website - Handmade eco envelopes made from cereal boxes.
Design Sponge Website - Altoid tin candles. I'm thinking about trying these for Christmas stocking stuffers.
American Crafts Website - Crafty flower bouquet made using buttons, felt and miscellaneous sewing bits.
Crafty Chica Blog - Recycled grocery tote made from used plastic bags.

The answer to last month's question: As per the article, Clinical Testing in Cosmetics, if a product is not subject to to minimum patch testing it must be labeled conspicuously on the package, "Warning: The safety of this product has not been determined." By the way, my apologies for using an article that required registration. Somehow I missed that one, and will be more careful in the future not to repeat the same mistake.

Congratulations to Geneva of Arkansas! She was the first to answer correctly, and received 4 ounces of our new Bamboo & Lotus Fragrance

New question: This month I'd like to take a look at consumer trends in this article from Cosmetics Design, Added-value and eco-packaging key trends in fragrance. For those of you running small businesses, understanding consumer trends is an important factor in deciding how to market your products. In their ever increasing concern for the environment, name the component (as stated in the article) that consumers are reconsidering.

Be the first to answer correctly, and you will receive a pack of 50 of our Kraft Eco-friendly Soap Boxes..

Until next month,
